File History stopped working: how to fix it
File History is the free backup built into Windows. It works well once set up, but it tends to stop silently: the drive changes letter, fills up, or a Windows update turns the feature off, and nobody notices until it is needed.
Signs this guide is for you
- The message "Reconnect your drive" appears or the feature says it is turned off.
- The date of the last copy is weeks or months ago.
- Folders outside the Libraries don't appear when restoring.
- Windows 11 doesn't show File History in Settings.
Why it happens
- The external drive changed letter or was formatted, and Windows no longer recognizes the destination.
- The destination filled up and old versions are not being removed.
- On Windows 11, the feature only appears through Control Panel, and folders outside the Libraries must be added by hand.
- Files with very long paths or open during the copy are skipped.
How to do it, step by step
- Open Control Panel, go to System and Security, then File History.
- If the drive is not found, plug in the drive, click Select drive and choose the disk again. The old copies are still there.
- If the drive is full, in Advanced settings shorten how long versions are kept or click Clean up versions.
- Click Run now and wait for it to finish; then, in Restore personal files, check that the right folders appear.
- On Windows 11, to include a folder that doesn't appear, add it to a Library or use another backup tool.
- If File History keeps stopping, consider a program that warns about failures and tests restores, such as Neural Backup's Free plan.
So it doesn't happen again
- Write down the day you last checked the backup.
- Use a drive only for backup, with no other files.
- Keep a second copy away from home.
Menu names may vary with your version of Windows. If a file is already missing, do not write anything to the drive where it was before trying to recover it.
No backup is an absolute guarantee: a destination can fail at the same time as the computer, and files that never made it into a backup cannot be restored. That is why the app verifies copies, tests restores and always recommends two destinations.
